According to an article posted in the November 29, 2007 issue of
U.S. News and World Report, results of a research project to identify the best
high schools across the United States were given. After analyzing the
academic and enrollment data from more than 18,000 public schools, Gold,
Silver, and Bronze Awards were presented to 1,591 schools across the United
States. The Gibson City Melvin Sibley High School was one of sixty-two
schools in Illinois to be awarded the “Best Schools” status, at the Bronze
Award level. Only 8.8% of the public schools in the United States received
recognition.
U.S.
News and World Report, in conjunction with School Evaluation Services,
developed a three-step analysis process to evaluate high schools in over forty
states. •ĚĘ˙˙˙˙x6 The K-12 data research and analysis business, which is
run by Standard & Poor’s, determined the three evaluation factors. First,
state test performance was analyzed, adjusting for student circumstances.
Disadvantaged students’ scores were evaluated next. Finally, the school was
looked at to determine success in providing college-level coursework. Gold
Medals were awarded to 100 schools, 405 schools earned the Silver, and 1,086
schools earned the Bronze.
The
GCMS High School was honored with the Bronze Award, meaning that it was one of
the schools that best exemplified how to prepare students to achieve their
post-graduation goals.
